Hi, I’m Janice Low

I’m a physiotherapist, kinesiologist, and former Special Olympics coach who refuses to stop believing that you can recover and get back to living your best life.
I am passionate about helping people take control of their recovery and return to the activities that they love.

I knew that whatever I was doing — or NOT doing — wasn’t working for me. After trying and failing over and over to find a practitioner who could offer me answers or relief, I was referred to a practitioner who explained to me what was actually going on with my body, did twice weekly treatments and educated me to start moving. One month later, I was back on my feet… and back on my skis. I knew that if I’d had this support from the start, then I wouldn't have lost everything and would have recovered more quickly.

I earned my Master’s in Physical Therapy from the University of British Columbia so that I could offer others the help that I’d needed so badly. Since then, I’ve continued to take and teach courses ranging from neurolinguistic programming to yoga to craniosacral therapy — I love learning and having a variety of tools that keep me ready to deal with anything I come across!

Bad things happen to everyone. While I can’t help people avoid injury, strain, or chronic pain 100% of the time, I can help them build their resilience and bounce back faster.

I’ve used physio to help myself and my clients recover from a wide range of injuries, including sports injuries, concussion, car accidents, work-related repetitive stress, joint pain, persistent pain syndrome, and my old nemesis, sciatica.

WHY PHYSIO

WHY PHYSIO?

Physiotherapists can use physical tests right in the office to determine whether your injury is stemming from your muscle, tendon, bones, or nerves, and are trained to determine when physio can help and when to refer for medical help. Have you ever been to a doctor who listens to you for 5 minutes, doesn’t touch you, and sends you away with a scribbled idea of a diagnosis or a requisition for an x-ray? You don’t have to wait for x-rays or MRIs to find out what’s wrong with you — find out today! I am currently at a 95% success rate for using physical tests to diagnose my patient’s injuries, which were later confirmed by imaging.

Physiotherapy uses physical treatments as well as exercises to treat chronic pain and stiffness, improve your flexibility and stability, prevent future injuries, and keep you mobile and active as you age. Why just take pain killers and go for surgery when a physio can fix the problem naturally? A skilled and experienced physiotherapist can step in where doctors and other practitioners have failed, and provide real and lasting relief for conditions such as persistent neck pain and stiffness, sciatica, and vestibular issues — and keep their clients off the waiting list for knee replacement surgery! Exercises, stretches, manual therapy techniques, and lifestyle coaching can be adapted to fit anyone, no matter their health condition, body type, level of fitness, or age. Coaching the Special Olympics for four years taught me how to adapt any activity so that a person with any type of limitation can still participate.

I’ve successfully treated clients ranging from 3 years old to 87 years old. I have helped semi-paralyzed stroke patients regain use of their hands and relearn to walk, dizzy people to regain equilibrium, dancers to perform pain-free, office workers to eliminate tingling in their hands, athletes to eradicate long-term back pain, heavy duty mechanics to heal their sciatica, and car accident victims to get back to normal… or better than normal!

FUN FACTS ABOUT ME:

I was a Special Olympics swim coach for four years and guided my team to gold medals in 2013 (told you I love sports!)

I taught PE in an elementary school and coached Grade 8 girls’ volleyball

I created and facilitated an upper-level course for UBC called ‘The Neuroplasticity of Exercise: A Rehabilitation Tool’, during which we created a magazine and video to help people with TBI, stroke, and spinal cord injury learn how to use exercise to heal

I enjoy reading scientific articles in my spare time (#NerdPower!)

Janice Low Physiotherapy clinic

I don’t believe in cookie-cutter, assembly-line, McDonald’s-style physio!

You won’t be left alone in a room with a hot compress and a TENS machine on while I treat 6 other people and then give you a lame five-minute massage and send you away. My one-on-one, 30-60 minute sessions will be customized to fit your specific needs and limitations. I use a wide range of modalities including physiotherapy, kinesiology, craniosacral therapy, manual therapy, myofascial release, exercise and lifestyle coaching, yoga, and more to help you achieve your fastest, safest, and longest-lasting results — and I test along the way to make sure that we’re actually making progress (like I said — no guesswork here)!

In addition to our in-person work, I will teach you pain-relieving movements that you can do throughout the day, and give you tips for adapting your home and workspace in order to stay more comfortable during your healing process.
